WATSONVILLE — The Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday discussed the possibility of purchasing its headquarters building, also known as the Towers.

In its board agenda published online, PVUSD said that Watsonville Towers, LLC – the company that owns the building at 294 Green Valley Road – will be selling the building.

As part of its lease agreement, the district has the option to purchase it.

The building is not yet listed publicly for sale.

Also during the Wednesday meeting, the trustees also discussed an item listed in the agenda only as “workforce housing.”

Both discussions occurred in closed session, meaning that little information is available publicly.

PVUSD Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez declined to state the asking price, citing ongoing negotiations.

The four-story, 134,422-square-foot building was assessed in 2017 at $10.9 million, according to MLS Listings. The property that surrounds it, at 339,332 square feet, was assessed at nearly $1.6 million.

Rodriguez said that district officials are seeking the most cost-effective way to stay in the building.

“We are dedicated to finding solutions that are cost-neutral or a cost savings for the district,” she said.

The district currently pays $104,000 per month for rent, which is funded by district programs such as Watsonville/Aptos/Santa Cruz Adult Education and Pacific Coast Charter School, Rodriguez said.

A handful of other companies occupy the third floor.

The district still has 13 years on its current lease, board president Leslie De Rose said.

“This is not in a situation where we’re going to have to move,” she said.

Rodriguez said that the district will publicly discuss the matters at the Feb. 14 board of trustees meeting.

Watsonville Towers, LLC did not return a call seeking comment.
