WATSONVILLE — What happens when a man has extensive construction knowledge, 500 hours of free time and about 150,000 pennies?

The answer for Watsonville resident Guillermo Magaña and his sons Abraham, 11, and Isaac, 9, was a floor entirely covered with the coins, along with a handful of dimes thrown in to make them all fit together.

That took painstakingly gluing down the pennies, placing grout around them and covering it all with clear epoxy.

It also took numerous trips to the bank to get rolls of pennies.

Magaña said he was inspired by a penny-covered chimney he saw while working for a contractor. He also covered a bar top in his garage with pennies.

“I like it,” he said. “It’s something new.”
