Lucia Maria Bettencourt passed away at Valley Convalescent Hospital after a courageous battle with multiple myelomas on the morning of Saturday, August 19, 2017. She was 68.

Lucia was born to Manuel Teixeira Bettencourt and Isabel Avila in Sao Antonio, Sao Jorge, Azores and moved to Watsonville in 1967. Lucia was a seamstress and worked at Colshire and Farr West Fashions before retiring after 35 years. She was a giving person who loved to sing and dance and spend time with her family, especially her many nieces and nephews.

Lucia was devoted to her Catholic faith. She regularly attended mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Church and made a point to recite the Rosary daily. Lucia took care of the Sacred Family; taking it from home to home in the community to give peace to those who have lost loved ones. She volunteered her time raising donations for the church. Lucia also sang in many choirs in her church and community.

Lucia is survived by her brothers, Manuel Bettencourt (Amelia) of the Azores, Dinnis Bettencourt and Albano Bettencourt (Maria) both of Watsonville; sisters, Celeste Luis (Mario) and Mercedes Teixeira (George) both of Watsonville; and numerous nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Antonio Bettencourt.

The Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians Church on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017 at 12:30 pm. Burial will follow at Watsonville Catholic Cemetery. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel was entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
