The Pajaro Valley High boys’ volleyball team started its season with a 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 25-20 win over cross-city rival Watsonville High on Thursday night.

Geovanny Barajas had 21 kills and two aces, Dennar Ocampo made 29 assists and six aces, and Esteban Fernandez finished with five blocks.

Pajaro Valley (1-0) hosts Soledad High on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

HS BASEBALL

• St. Francis 10, Pioneer 4 –  Tanner Putnins drove in five runs on a pair of hits to lead St. Francis High over Pioneer High to a win in the Michael De Jesus Tournament on Thursday.

Derric Estrada-Haro drove in two runs and had two hits and Blaise Magana scored three runs.

Felipe Padia-Noriega picked up the win in five innings of work. He allowed five hits, no earned runs and a walk, while striking out five.

• Aptos 3, MVC 2 – David Reckers struck out five batter over 4 1-3 innings to lead Aptos High over Monte Vista Christian on Wednesday afternoon in preseason action.

Reckers was also 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. Will Murphy scored twice for Aptos (1-0), which welcomes in Carmel High on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

• Aptos 11, MVC 0 – Julia Cano tossed a two-hit shutout to power Aptos High over Monte Vista Christian in a five-inning preseason win on Wednesday afternoon.

Cano recorded eight strikeouts, Vanessa Segura was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a scored run. Martinez Churchill went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two scored runs. Shea Garcia batted a perfect 3-for-3 with two scored runs. Ashley Del Colletti  finished 2-for-3 with three scored runs and an RBI.

Aptos (2-0) hosts Linden High and Pacific Grove High today in a double-header starting at noon.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

• SC Quakes tryouts – The Santa Cruz Quakes, a girls’ AAU basketball team based in Santa Cruz County, is holding tryouts on Sunday at Aptos High.

Tryouts begin at 3 p.m. for grades fifth-eighth. Tryouts for high school players begin at 4 p.m.
