Watsonville High cross country runner Layla Ruiz won the girl’s freshman race at the Pacific Grove Invitational on Saturday in Pacific Grove.

She completed the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 24.75 seconds.

• Natividad, Mora place in top 10 – Aptos High senior Sofia Natividad took sixth and North Monterey County High junior Faith Mora was ninth in the championship race of Saturday’s Serra Invitational at Crystal Springs Cross Country Course in Belmont.

Natividad finished the 5,000-meter run in 19 minutes, 39.7 seconds and Mora trailed behind her in ninth (19:59.7).

N.M.C. finished fifth as a team. Natividad was the lone Aptos runner in the championship race.

St. Francis High sophomore Angelika Castro was the Sharks’ top finisher, coming in 18th (21:18.2) in the varsity race.

BOY’S CROSS COUNTRY

• Kelly takes 6th – St. Francis High junior E.J. Kelly finished sixth in the varsity race of Saturday’s Serra Invitational at Crystal Springs Cross Country Course in Belmont.
Kelly completed the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 16 seconds.

North Monterey County High senior Edgar Medina was the Condors’ fastest runner. He took 18th (16:41.9).

In the championship race, Aptos High senior Koya Oki was 20th (16:23.6).

• Leon, Alvarez finish in top 10 – Watsonville High’s Miguel Leon and Jesus Alvarez placed in the top 10 of their respective race at the Pacific Grove Invitational on Saturday in Pacific Grove.

In the sophomore race, Leon finished the 5,000-meter course in seventh with a time of 18 minutes, 26.12 seconds. Alvarez was 10th (18:16.72) in the junior race.

Damian Rivas was 12th (18:50.28) in the sophomore race.

MEN’S JC SOCCER

• Cabrillo 5, Evergreen Valley 1 – Walmer Martinez scored two goals, Steve Lopez also scored and dished an assist and the Cabrillo College Seahawks blasted the Evergreen Valley Hawks in Coast Conference South play on Friday on the road.

Will Christman and Joel Sanchez also scored for Cabrillo (6-3-1, 2-2), while Ricardo Olvera made an assist.

The Seahawks play at City College of San Francisco today at 4 p.m.

• Cabrillo 3, MPC 0 – The Cabrillo College Seahawks started their Coast Conference North division season with a 25-14, 25-10, 25-15 sweep of Monterey Peninsula College on Friday night.
