Watsonville suspended first-year baseball coach Leroy Dozal indefinitely on Monday, Principal Elaine Legorreta confirmed with this newspaper on Tuesday morning.

In a phone interview, Legorreta said she could not go into detail on the reasons for the suspension, but said the administration and Pajaro Valley Unified School District office were hoping to complete the investigation “soon.”

“We want the season to continue, so we’re trying to resolve the matter quickly,” Legorreta said. “But it’s more important to be accurate than to hurry through the investigation.”

Practice was canceled on Monday and Tuesday’s Monterey Bay League Pacific division game against Alisal was postponed.

Dozal, who was hired just four months ago, declined to comment.

An assistant at Christopher last season and a head coach at Anzar from 2000-07, Dozal took over for James Gomez, who led the team for 19 seasons.

The Wildcatz are 2-3 overall and 2-2 in league play after falling to cross-city rival Pajaro Valley on Friday night in a stunning 7-2 loss, which allowed the Grizzlies to snap a 131-game losing streak against league opponents.
