WATSONVILLE — As Watsonville mayor, Felipe Hernandez was a driving force behind Bike Friendly Watsonville, a community event that challenges residents to get out, dust off their bicycles and join a ride along the levee.

The organization, which began in 2015, also advocates for improved bike infrastructure in Watsonville.

Now, Santa Cruz-based Bike Santa Cruz County has awarded Hernandez its annual Wheelie Award, which honors recipients for advocacy in biking efforts.

“We are excited and proud to announce that (Watsonville City) council member Hernandez has been selected by the Bike Santa Cruz County Board to receive a Wheelie Award in the Advocacy category,” the organization stated in a press release.

According to Bike Santa Cruz County, Hernandez grew up riding BMX bikes and has always had a passion for cycling.

“…Hernandez has shown a tireless commitment to promoting bicycling in our community,” the organization stated.
