Five local volleyball players were recognized by the Monterey Bay League with a spot on their respective first teams, the league recently announced.

Monte Vista Christian’s outside hitters Mattea Romo and Cassidy Schurman were named to the Gabilan division First Team, while North Monterey County High libero Malia Garcia, Pajaro Valley High outside hitter Natalia Gallegos and Watsonville High opposite Camila Cardenas all made the Pacific division First Team.

Romo and Schurman helped the Mustangs to a 15-15 overall record and a third-place finish in the Gabilan division. M.V.C. also advanced to the Central Coast Section playoffs for the fifth straight season.

Romo finished second on the team in kills (162), assists (167) and aces (37) and was third in digs (203).

Schurman, meanwhile, paced the team in kills (168) and aces (43), while also finishing fourth in digs (150).

Garcia was a bright spot for the Condors, who finished 0-12 in MBL-P action.

Gallegos, who was a defensive force for the Grizzlies, helped P.V. finish 13-13 overall and 4-8 in MBL-Pacific division play.

Watsonville’s top offensive threat and natural fit for the opposite with her southpaw swing, Cardenas was the focal point of a Wildcatz’s team that had tons of potential but finished with an 8-15 overall record.

In the Gabilan division, San Benito High’s Lauren Sabatini and Salinas High’s Taylor Rose shared league Most Valuable Player honors. San Benito coach Emily Burley and Salinas coach Chloe Goldman were named co-Coaches of the Year.

M.V.C. was given the Sportsmanship team award.

In the Pacific division, Monterey High’s Jhailyn Bryant and North Salinas High’s Teresa Ochoa earned co-Most Valuable Player honors.

North Salinas head coach Maggie Barrera was named the Coach of the Year in the MBL-P.

M.V.C.’s middle blockers Allie Tillery and Abbey Lynch both earned a spot on the MBL-G Second Team.

Watsonville libero Alexis Pena, P.V.’s outside hitter Julie Che and N.M.C.’s outside hitter Desiree Romero all made the MBL-P Second Team.
