Symphony League presents ‘Music and Art in the Garden’

WATSONVILLE — The Santa Cruz Symphony League will present “Music and Art in the Garden” on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Sierra Azul Gardens, 2660 East Lake Ave. in Watsonville.

The event will feature the “Sculpture IS” exhibit prepared by the Pajaro Valley Arts Council, live music, wine and a silent auction.

Entrepreneurs to share successes

WATSONVILLE — El Pajaro Community Development Corporation will hold “¡Día del Empresario Latino! A Day of Practical & Dynamic Workshops for the Modern Entrepreneur Presented by the Experts” on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Watsonville Civic Plaza, 275 Main Street, fourth floor.

The program will be presented in Spanish.

Monterey Bay Dog Training Club to raise funds for foundation

CAPITOLA — On Saturday starting at the Target parking lot at 10:30 a.m., the nonprofit Monterey Bay Dog Training Club will be walking the perimeter sidewalks around the Capitola Mall.

The goal of the morning is to raise donations and awareness for the Morris Animal Foundation. After lunch at Burger, the group will walk the Kmart parking lot on Freedom Boulevard in Watsonville.

The Morris Animal Foundation supports scientific research that advances veterinary medicine. Since its founding in 1948, the foundation has invested more than $113 million toward more than 2,500 studies that have improved the health and quality of life for dogs, cats, horses and wildlife around the world.

Pie for the People to support Immigration Project

SANTA CRUZ — On Sunday from 1-3 p.m., Pie for the People-Santa Cruz will hold its eighth community fundraiser, supporting the Santa Cruz County Immigration Project. The event will take place on the grounds of the Homeless Garden Project on Shaffer Road at Delaware Avenue in Santa Cruz.

Started in 2015 by three local families, Pie for the People is a seasonal community pie potluck that benefits grassroots nonprofits on a rotating basis. One nonprofit is chosen for each event and the community gathers to eat pie, bid on special pies that are auctioned off in support of the featured nonprofit, and hear more from the nonprofit’s staff about their mission and work.

This month’s featured nonprofit, SCCIP, provides free legal services, advocacy and community education and information for Santa Cruz and Pajaro Valley immigrant families.

“In this political landscape, the Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County and one of its most critical programs, Santa Cruz County Immigration Project, will continue to offer resources, support and guidance to address the immigration needs of our community’s most vulnerable who are facing uncertainties, discrimination and fear like never before,” said Maria Elena de la Garza, executive director of the Community Action Board, the umbrella organization that supports six programs including SCCIP. “SCCIP is committed to help by providing legal expertise through the work of the director, Doug Keegan, and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who stand for equity and courage.”

“We chose SCCIP because the news cycle may have moved on from the topic, but our immigrant friends and neighbors still urgently need our support,” said Andrea Roth, a member of the Pie for the People Steering Committee and a co-founder of the group.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their families, a sweet or savory vegetarian pie, a $5 donation for the featured nonprofit and their own plates and cutlery.

Flower Festival and Feast set for Sunday

BONNY DOON — The College of Botanical Healing Arts presents the Third Annual Flower Festival and Feast on Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

Guests to the gardens of a private Bonny Doon estate will take part in a garden-to-table feast of edible flowers and essential oil infused cuisine catered by Jozseph Schultz of India Joze.

John Steele, a world plant explorer, will be the speaker.

Live jazz and bossa nova classics will be performed by Jeannine Bonstelle and Trio Passarim.

A wine bar, steam distillation demonstrations, hydrosol bar, essential oil blending bar, and massage by Tony Alonzo round out the event.
