WATSONVILLE — More than 500 incoming freshmen walked onto the Watsonville High School campus for the first time Thursday, but on this day, they didn’t have to worry about academics.

These students, many of whom were undoubtedly beset by first-day jitters, were instead there to calm their nerves and meet the peer leaders that would ease their transition into high school and guide them during their first year.

Those leaders are otherwise known as the Link Crew, part of the school’s “Bridge to High School Mentor Program.”

They are team of 100 junior and seniors who signed up to be a for guide their younger peers as they navigate the sprawling campus and seek their place among the vast educational and social systems that make up high school.
