Brenda Alcara Velador

WATSONVILLE A Watsonville woman who police say fled the county to avoid arrest for allegedly injuring a child with her vehicle was arrested Thursday at a residence in Vacaville.

Brenda Alcara Velador, 19, was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on $500,000 bail.

According to the Watsonville Police Department, Velador was speeding on Main Street near First Street on March 12 when she struck a 10-year-old boy who was walking with his family in a crosswalk.

The boy still remains in critical condition, according to police.

Velador was not arrested, and the investigation was ongoing for several months.

After the investigation, police obtained a warrant for reckless driving that caused serious bodily injury.

Velador refused to turn herself in, and police believe she fled to Vacaville to avoid arrest.

Detectives eventually developed information that led them to Vacaville.
