WATSONVILLE — Rebecca Garcia has thrown her hat in the ring to square off against incumbent Daniel Dodge for the District 5 seat on the Watsonville City Council in the Nov. 4 election.

Garcia has been involved in Watsonville politics for decades, an endeavor launched in earnest in 1988 when she joined the fight that resulted in the current district election system.

The court case Dolores Cruz Gomez v. the City of Watsonville, which made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, ended at-large elections and allowed voters in the city’s seven districts to choose their own representative.

The case was intended to end a system believed to be disenfranchising Latino voters.

“Many of us Latino leaders in this city fought really hard for that lawsuit because we wanted our voice — the Latino voice — to be heard on City Council, because it had not been heard,” she said.
