WATSONVILLE — As the morning sun burned off the last of the clouds Monday, it was shaping up to be a perfect summer day, perhaps made even more precious as the final days of summer were winding down.

But even as many young people eked out their last days of freedom, more than a hundred incoming eighth-graders chose to spend a week studying math, a subject that has been a roadblock for many a student.

It has been five years since Graniterock CEO Bruce Woolpert created the company’s Algebra Academy, which was designed to give incoming eighth-graders a way to get over those roadblocks and a head start on middle school math.

The Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy, which runs from Aug. 7-12 in the company’s Watsonville headquarters, was led by professors from UC Santa Cruz and CSU Monterey Bay.

Students from Aromas School, and E.A. Hall, Pajaro, Rancho San Justo, Rolling Hills, San Juan and Tres Pinos middle schools participated in the academy.
