WATSONVILLE — Just before the 5 p.m. kickoff of the National Night Out Against Crime event at the Stone Creek Apartment complex in Watsonville Tuesday night, an uninflated jump house lay on the pavement, with several children clambering over it.

But when a passing adult flicked a switch on a large blower and the castle finally took shape, more than a dozen young people waiting at the door charged in, their exuberant, chaotic bouncing an appropriate kickoff to the annual event.

Their shouts were neatly drowned out by a nearby stereo that was blaring music, and by the chattering of adult residents who were eating the free food.

Apartment manager Sandra Perez said the event has historically brought more than 300 residents to celebrate and to create awareness of issues such as drugs and violence.
