AROMAS — Dozens of Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies descended on a rural home on Corey Road in Aromas Wednesday following a report of a man threatening his girlfriend with a handgun.

Sgt. Ron Willis said the incident was initially reported around 4:50 a.m. in Prunedale on Crazy Horse Canyon Road. Witnesses reported seeing Jeffery Howard, 51, struggling with his wife outside a home. Howard was holding a shotgun that went off during the scuffle.

The wife was able to break away and call 9-1-1. Swat team members were summoned and the California Highway Patrol shut down the Crazy Horse Canyon Road exit from Highway 101. Fearing a standoff, deputies used extreme caution in approaching the home.
