SANTA CRUZ The USS Nimitz, a supercarrier of the U.S. Navy, headed out to sea Friday after a brief stopover in Santa Cruz.

The nuclear-powered, multi-mission aircraft carrier is 1,092-feet long. The ship's company is 3,200 and it can carry about 60 aircraft. The $8.5 billion ship was first deployed to the Mediterranean July 7, 1976.

One of the largest war ships in the world, the USS Nimitz is on its way home, to Everett, Washington, from San Diego.
