GILROY Among the tens of thousands of people who attend the GIlroy Garlic Festival are a series of close-knit communities.

That is so for this year's Garlic Queen Brittney Souza, who has been volunteering with the festival since she was 7. She often finds herself working alongside one of her high school coaches, a classmate, and family members.

It's this community that keeps her coming back to the festival every year.

"It's a place where everyone in Gilroy comes together," she said.

The 36th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival fired up the skillets Friday and will continue to do so today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Christmas Hill Park.
