WATSONVILLE — Emergency personnel had their hands full Saturday just before noon when they received a call about a hand grenade that was found in a garage.

Watsonville Police Ed Delfin said the call came in at 11:56 a.m. regarding the grenade in a home on the 300 block of Palm Avenue.

“I was at home with my younger sister when the police knocked on the door and asked us to get out,” said Edwin Camacho, 12.

When police arrived they began evacuating surrounding residences. Palm Avenue, between Lincoln and Jefferson streets, was blocked-off until 5:30 p.m.

Members of the Santa Cruz County Bomb Squad identified the item as military ordnance. Members of the Travis Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team also responded and took the device and eventually destroyed it at an unnamed location, Delfin said.

“It is unknown at this time how the device got there,” Delfin said.

Anyone with information regarding this case is strongly encouraged to call the Watsonville Police Department tip line at 724-3544 or the Watsonville Police Department Investigation Bureau at 768-3350.
