WATSONVILLE — Nine people were displaced early Thursday morning after a fire destroyed two connected residences, according to the Watsonville Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to 23 Altamont Drive approximately 3 a.m. for a report of a fire alarm. A Watsonville police officer confirmed that the fire had spread to two structures, and that the residents had been evacuated.

One resident was transported to Watsonville Community Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Watsonville Fire Department, Cal Fire and AMR responded to the fire, and American Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced families.

The cause of the fire was unknown Thursday morning, and the investigation is ongoing.

Patsy Gasca, emergency services manager at the American Red Cross, said her workers helped shelter six children and three adults.

"Right now we're asking anyone that can help with a financial donation to please come forward," she said. "We are dealing with hotel costs and trying to find these folks another permanent place to live. Those homes are going to take a long time to repair."

Gasca can be reached at 600-4902.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Watsonville Police Department tip line at 724-3544 or the Watsonville Police Department Investigation Bureau at 768-3350.
