Pajaro Valley Historical Associationís Vintage Picnic celebrates Fordís Department Store

WATSONVILLE Ė For more than a century Fordís Department Store was a downtown hub, purveying everything from the latest in womenís summer fashions to housewares and even grocery items. It was the place where you might be just as likely to buy your prom dress as your socks and new frying pan.

The department store, which opened in 1852 and closed in 1993, was celebrated Saturday as part of the Pajaro Valley Historical Associationís annual Vintage Picnic.

Two former employees of the store, Jean Perry and Nevenka Radich, shared their experiences with the crowd that gathered on the sunny grounds of the Bockius-Orr house Saturday afternoon.

Perry worked at the store from 1972 to 1992, and recalled working there at the time of the Loma Prieta earthquake. It was more than just a job, she said, explaining that she and her fellow employees came to really care about and know their customers.
