WATSONVILLE — Two days after Watsonville resident Niko Lares celebrated his 10th birthday, he climbed aboard a small plane, strapped himself into the front seat and felt the rush of the 180 horsepower engine as it became airborne.

Niko had come with his father to the Watsonville Municipal Airport annual open house, where anyone with a yen for flight could pay 10 cents par pound for a 20-minute flight.

He said his only other flight was on a passenger plane “when I was really small.”

“My mom told me I could ride in an airplane, so I got pretty excited,” he said.
