SANTA CRUZ Although the world may be a stage, according to Shakespeare, it nearly wasn't to be in Santa Cruz after 32 years.

But thanks to a nonprofit group's efforts, the stage has come back to this part of the world and will reintroduce itself to audiences Tuesday with "As You Like It," the first of three shows this season.

The former Shakespeare Santa Cruz is now Santa Cruz Shakespeare, but unlike its predecessor, the nonprofit group is independent and no longer affiliated with UC Santa Cruz, said Mike Ryan, co-artistic director with Marco Barricelli.

Even though the name may be flipped, Santa Cruz Shakespeare is made up of mostly the same group of people, and the quality of the productions will be "exactly the same," Ryan said.
