LA SELVA BEACH — A Marina man was arrested Thursday for a June 23 incident in which he allegedly cut in front of a small school bus, then intentionally backed into it when it came to a stop, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Kennedy said Thursday.

Jeffery Bowie, 35, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and child cruelty. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

According to Kennedy, the bus was traveling north on Highway 1 near Larkin Valley Road approximately 1:30 p.m. Bowie, driving a Toyota Corolla, swerved in front of the bus, rapidly slowed to 15 miles per hour and attempted to swerve into it.

The bus driver veered into the breakdown lane to avoid a collision, and then Bowie pulled in front of the bus and intentionally backed into it, Kennedy said.

Neither the driver nor the single passenger, a 3-year-old girl, were injured.

Bowie was also arrested on June 24 in Santa Cruz for drunk and disorderly behavior.

Deputies contacted Bowie and arrested him at his residence.

“It seems like there is something going on in this guy's life that he can’t handle, and it’s manifesting itself like this,” Kennedy said.
