WATSONVILLE — With rising child obesity rates in the U.S. reaching what doctors emphasize are critical levels, there’s no understating the importance of getting outdoors and getting moving.

That’s a major motivation behind Monterey Bay Youth Outdoor Day, an annual event that’s been held for the past four years at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. The event brings together representatives from all sorts of youth and outdoor-related organizations and activities for an annual expo. The mission of Monterey Bay Youth Outdoor Day is to combat so-called nature deficiency disorder, and to get kids out enjoying what the central coast has to offer.

“We are looking to encourage youth to be healthy through outdoor activities, and to build a better place for the future,” the founders write in their mission statement.

Saturday’s free event featured interactive demonstrations in stand-up paddleboarding, fly fishing, disc golf, indoor rock climbing and planting, among many others. Tables with representatives from the Elkhorn Slough, the NRA, the Ben Lomond Mountain Feed and Supply Store and Renee’s Garden offered information, demonstrations and interactive activities. Some 35 different exhibitors took part, providing interesting things to see and do for kids of all ages — and their parents.
