Sheriff’s, District Attorney offices propose budgets

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Working in tandem, the outgoing Santa Cruz County Sheriff and the man recently elected to replace him presented their departmental budget for 2014-15.

Phil Wowak, who announced his retirement in March, and Chief Deputy Jim Hart, who will take the reins in January, were representing the sheriff’s office, among nearly 40 county agencies that presented their budgets over the week to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, which is tasked with allocating the county’s $639 million budget.

The sheriff’s office budget request was $25.2 million for the law enforcement arm, and $29.5 million for the operations side.
