Business appeals shelter decision

Posted: Friday, Jun 20th, 2014

WATSONVILLE A neighboring business is appealing the Watsonville Planning Commission's decision to allow a women's shelter to move in downtown.

The City Council will look at the appeal Tuesday, but is expected to deny it, according to a report by Community Development Director Marcela Tavantzis and Principal Planner Keith Boyle.

At issue is Teen Challenge Monterey Bay's proposal to convert the 20,000-square-foot former Baker Brothers Furniture store, on 55 Brennan St., into a 94-bed shelter for women and children, as well as a women's drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility.

Timothy Walsh of Walsh & Roach, LLP at 45 Brennan St., wrote in his appeal letter that parking would be aggravated in an already congested area.
