Bone marrow donor meets recipient for first time

WATSONVILLE — Elizabeth Bonilla celebrated her quinceañera Saturday, and her 15th birthday the next day.

The ceremony is a rite of passage for many Latinas, a time where they make the transition from girlhood into a young woman.

But for Elizabeth, the day had special significance — it came almost three years after a bone marrow transplant sent her leukemia into remission.

It also fell close to the anniversary she received her diagnosis — June 17, 2011 — two days after her 12th birthday.

Even after she received the diagnosis, Elizabeth said she tried to keep a positive attitude.
