Local Round Up: A.L.L. Dodgers outslug W.A.L.L. Angels 13-10

The Aptos Little League champion Dodgers escaped elimination and brought the Watsonville American Little League champion Angels season to a close with a 13-10 win Thursday in the District 39 Majors Tournament of Champions at Harvey West park in Santa Cruz.

After the Dodgers jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the third inning the Angels fought their way back and came within one run, 11-10 in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Rocky Ramirez.

The Dodgers outfielder rifled in a throw to the catcher and caught the game-tying run trying to score to keep the one-run cushion intact.

The next inning Colby Sturgill hit a two RBI double to extend the lead to three and pitcher Grant Kolassa got the final three Angels batters to go down in order.

Angels leadoff hitter Isaiah Rocha was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and catcher Ryan Itamura had a double and two RBIs.

Sturgill had a double, two singles and brought home three for the Dodgers. His teammate Jake Lanagan also had a double and two singles, while smacking two RBIs. Grant Kolassa was 4-for-4 and Casey Bailey finished with two RBIs on a double and a single.

The Dodgers move on to another elimination game against the winner of Santa Cruz American and Santa Cruz National champions. The game will be today at 3 p.m. at Harvey West Park.

• Minors - The Aptos Little League Minors champions play the Capitola/Soquel Little League Minors champions today at noon at Live Oak Little League for a spot in the championship game.

Neither team has lost so far.

• 7-8 Year olds - The Watsonville American Little League 7-8-year-old champion beat the Santa Cruz National champion 12-11 Wednesday in an elimination game.

They will play today at Pinto Lake at 1 p.m.

The Aptos Little League champion plays in the early game at 10 a.m. against Live Oak Little League.

JULIE ORTIZ SETS STATE RECORD AND FINISHES 1ST IN TWO EVENTS

• In her second ever powerlifting meeting, Watsonville’s Julie Ortiz took first in the deadlift and bench press, while setting a state record in the lift, at a World Association of Benchpressers and Deadlifters meet June 7th at the Hyatt in Monterey.

She deadlifted 275 pounds to take first place and pushed up a state record in the bench press of 137 pounds to also take first, while competing in the 165-pound weight class of the junior women division.

TY SAMBRAILO VOTED TO ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST PRESEASON TEAMS

• St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High alum, and current Colorado State offensive tackle Tyler Sambrailo was voted as an All-Mountain West preseason selection by nine different websites and magazines that cover the NCAA Division I football conference.

He was a first-teamer in eight of the nine selections.
