March 26, 1933 – June 11, 2014
On June 11, 2014 at 6:02 AM Genevieve Maurer said goodbye to her family and friends at her Hacienda in Castroville, CA, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by her children, Rose, Jeff and her devoted niece Roberta.
Life started for Genevieve on March 26, 1933 in Greeley Colorado where she was raised by her parents Estevan and Mary (Pineda) Magallanez. They later moved to Pasadena Calif. where they continued family life together with her younger sibling’s sister Helen (Magallanez) Medina and Brother Steve Magallanez. She attended Pasadena Schools and Pasadena City College. She enjoyed spending time with her cousins and friends attending social outings and dances at the local social clubs. She was also a member of the Mexican American Heritage Society.
She was blessed with three beautiful children Genevieve “Gibby” (Farnum) Castle, Rose Martha (Farnum) Hendrix and Jeffery Lane Farnum. She raised her children in San Jose Calif., where she became a wonderful stay at home mother. She was actively involved in her children’s school and community. Some of her most enjoyable community activities were teaching Baile Folklorico, and Spanish language lessons. Once her children started middle school she began working at J.C.Penney’s in the gift wrapping and finance department. In the early 1970’s she began a career working as a Medical Insurance Biller at a convalescent home where she developed skills in caring for the elderly.
Her Cousin Richard “Dickie” Pineda introduced her to Frank Maurer who in 1976 she married. They enjoyed traveling to together and lived in Rio Del Mar Beach Calif. During her marriage she worked part time as an interpreter for an immigration attorney. While working as an interpreter she helped many friends obtain their U.S. Citizenship. As a humanitarian, she always wanted to help others better their lives. She was extremely proud to be an American of Mexican Descent. She was also an active member of her local parish Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church where she attended mass; she was also responsible for the beautiful church bells which she so generously donated.
In 1991, Genevieve and Frank built their dream house, “La Hacienda” where they retired. After her husband Frank passed away in 1998, Genevieve continued to enjoy her life at the Hacienda. It was here where she enjoyed gardening and took pride in her crops; she always made sure everyone who left her home always took a bag of her fresh home grown fruit and vegetables with them. She also enjoyed entertaining family and friends taking many trips to The Whole Enchilada, Phil’s Fish Market, Monterey Bay Aquarium and the occasional trip to D’LaColmena for carnitas.
Genevieve will always be remembered for her elegance, grace, kindness, and generosity. Her laughter and warm smile will forever be in our hearts.
She is preceded in death by: Estevan Magallanez (Father), Mary C. (Pineda) Magallanez (Mother), Frank Maurer (Husband), Genevieve Castle (daughter), Otis (grandson), and Chance Lee Farnum (grandson).
