A long shot: Stolen gun returned after 36 years

WATSONVILLE — City resident Joe Myers was a full-time reserve officer with the Watsonville Police Department 36 years ago, when someone broke into the East Lake Avenue house where he still lives and filled a pillowcase with his wife’s jewelry and his new Smith & Wesson .357 revolver.

Using his detective skills, Myers tracked all the jewelry to a Sacramento pawn shop.

But the gun, which he had been purchased at Markley’s Indoor Range & Gun Shop just two weeks before it was stolen, was never found.
