Santa Cruz Warriors: Dubs falls to Energy late 133-120

Modified: Monday, Mar 17th, 2014

Santa Cruz Warriors guard, and Golden State assignment player, Nemanja Nedovic (14) drives around Iowa Energy guard Patrick Christopher during the first quarter of their NBA D-League basketball game Saturday at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz lost 133-120.

SANTA CRUZ — Round two goes to the master.

The Santa Cruz Warriors lost 133-120 to the visiting Iowa Energy Saturday splitting their two-game series and missing a big opportunity to move a spot up in the NBA D-League West Division standings.

“We didn’t guard the 3-point line,” said Santa Cruz coach Casey Hill. “At all. That was the difference in the game. We can’t let a guy come off the bench and score 28 points.”

Moses Ehambe scored 28 points to pace the Energy while coming off the pine. He shot 6-of-12 from 3-point land. His night was a mirror image of the Energy’s outing overall. They shot 50 percent from deep.

Ehambe’s biggest shots came at the perfect time.

He hit two clutch 3-pointers in the final four minutes, and pushed the Iowa lead to 10 with a transition layup with 2:14 left.

The loss was compounded by the fact that the Idaho Stampede beat the Reno Bighorns just minutes before the conclusion of the Warriors’ loss.

The Dubs could’ve leapt the Bighorns for second place in the West and the fourth seed in the NBA D-League playoffs.

“Disappointed in the loss,” said Santa Cruz forward Lance Goulbourne. “We fought hard though.”
