Local Round Up: Mariners sweep Cougars thanks to Welle, Dorfman

The Aptos Mariners swept the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars 25-14, 25-14, 25-23 Thursday.

Ben Dorfman had 13 kills and Cole Welle added 10 along with three assists and an ace.

Kolby Losik had five kills, three aces and 23 assists.

• Monterey 3, Pajaro Valley 0 - The Pajaro Valley Grizzlies fell in Monterey to the Toreadors 25-12, 25-18, 25-18.

Ruben Garcia had five assists. Eddie Medina had three kills and two blocks. Miguel Jara finished with three aces.



• St. Francis - The 4x400-meter relay distance team of Braxton Rico, Sam Magno, Nathaniel Ramos and Michael Sanchez took first in St. Francis Central Coast Catholic’s first Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League meet of the season.

Magano took first in the 300-meter hurdles at 48.76 seconds, Sanchez was first in the triple jump with a leap of 24-9 and Perla Ornels-Perez throw of 25 even, was good enough for first in the shot put.

• North Monterey County - The North Monterey County track and field girl’s team beat North Salinas 73-59, but the boys fell 95-41 Thursday in Castroville.

Destaney Vasquez, Elisa Ibarra and Taylor Blaha were triple event winners.

Vasquez won the 1600-meters with a time of 6 minutes, the 3200 at 13:23 and was a part of the 4x400-meter team that took first at 4:43.

Ibarra was also on the 4x400 team, and she took first in the 400 (67.6) and the 800 (2:54).

Blaha dominated the field events winning the long jump (15-9), triple jump (31-11) and high jump (4-4).

Isaiah Russell and Mario Gonzalez were double event winners.

Russell won the 400 (54.9) and the 200 (24.1), while Gonzalez took first in the discus (161-1) and shot put (50-2).

• St. Francis - The Aptos Mariners boys and girls both won their first Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League meet of the season against Harbor.

The boys won 117-14 and the girls posted a shutout 135-0.

C.J. Pisturino won the long jump at 18-8, and the high jump with a leap of 5-8. Dominic Rodriguez throws of 43-5 and 134-5 in the shot put and discus respectively were both good for first place. Zach Fisher won the 110-meter hurdles at 16.2 seconds and the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.3.

Morgan Miller won the 1600 (4:38.9), Patrick Olson was first in the 800 (2:04.8) and Cole Rothman took the 400 (54.3).

Natalie Wendt and Ashley Doherty were double event winners for the Aptos girls.

Wendt won the 100 hurdles (18.4) and the 300 hurdles (55.3). Doherty took first in the shot put (28-6) and discus (99).

Amanda Hudson won the high jump (4-10), Analeece Julien took first in the 100 (12.9), Emma Crocker took the 200 (28.1), Clare Peabody finished first in the 800 (2:22.2) and Yulisa Abundis mark of 5:25.1 in the 1600 landed her in the first.



• Monte Vista Christian 6, Alisal 1 - The Monte Vista Christian Mustangs took down the Alisa Trojans 6-1 Thursday in Salinas.

Jayson Lee, Brian Lai and Antonio Ruiz all won their singles matches, and their three doubles teams swept their matches.



• Monte Vista Christian 3, King City 1 - Kelli Graham hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the eighth inning to boot the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs past King City 3-1.

Graham was also the winning pitcher. She gave up only three hits while recording the win for the Mustangs (5-1).

Monte Vista Christian travels to Gonzales Monday.

• Live Oak 6, Aptos 5 - Jennifer Segura hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, but Aptos still lost 6-5 to Live Oak Thursday.

Kate Jefferies was 3-of-4 with an RBI. Casey Messersmtih finished 2-of-4 with an RBI.

Aptos will play in the Watsonville Tournament this weekend.



• Monte Vista Christian 5, Salinas 3 - Monte Vista Christian won their first game of Monterey Bay League Gabilan play with a 5-3 win against Salinas Thursday.

Nick Zertuche was 2-of-5 with two RBIs and Austin Muller finished 2-of-5 with three RBIs. Patrick Muller went 3-of-4 and scored twice.

Aaron Whitehouse got the start going six innings and surrendering seven hits, two walks and three runs.

Monte Vista Christian (3-2, 1-1) hosts Christopher Tuesday at 4 p.m.

• Watsonville 5, Alisal 1 - The Watsonville Wildcatz beat the Alisa Trojans 5-1 thanks to Oscar Gonzalez and Noah Barto’s bats.

Gonzalez and Barto, both recorded two RBIs and Rex Gomez had a double and an RBI to lead Watsonville (3-1, 1-0) to another win Wednesday.

Canek Gomez got the win in three innings of relief. He gave up one hit and struck out three.

Watsonville played Friday against Alisal, check register-pajaronian.com from the results. The Wildcatz host Pajaro Valley Monday at 6 p.m.
