WATSONVILLE — A wise man once said, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.”

Wednesday, the journey wasn’t great for St. Francis Central Coast Catholic, but the destination was one nine years in the making.

The No. 8 seed Sharks mustered up just enough offense in a low-scoring, “ugly” battle to beat the No. 9 seeded San Domenico Panthers 27-19 in Watsonville.

“I’ll take the win,” said St. Francis head coach Randy Braga. “Any win I can get, I’ll take. Winning ugly, it doesn’t matter, a win’s a win.”

It was the program’s first NorCal playoff win. They came up seven points short against Turlock Christian last season.

“Last year we came up short in this situation,” Braga said, “so as long as we keep moving forward, then I’m happy.”

Jessica Ward led the Sharks (21-7, 9-4) with eight points. Amber Martinez added seven and Cameron Croghan and Sonja Shumake finished with six.

It was their lowest point total for a win this season.

Croghan hit a big 3-point shot to open the final quarter, Ward helped with two lay-ins and Shumake iced it with a pair of late free throws moving St. Francis past San Domenico (23-6) and the dreaded first-round exit.

It was a very different finish and game from their last contest against the Pacific Collegiate School Pumas, where they fell 45-44 in the final seconds of the Central Coast Section Division V championship.

The Sharks were crowned the champions the day after, because of a forfeit from PCS.
