MBL-Gabilan Baseball: Monte Vista starts fast, slows down in 11-5 loss to Salinas

Modified: Wednesday, Mar 12th, 2014

Monte Vista Christian Mustangs head coach Don Keathley, right, speaks to his team during the fourth inning of their Monterey Bay League Gabilan opener against Salinas Tuesday in Watsonville.

WATSONVILLE — Mustangs head coach Don Keathley said it best.

Four runs was not enough.

Monte Vista Christian’s bats froze up after a four-run opening inning and visiting Salinas smacked 15 hits to beat the Mustangs 11-5 in their Monterey Bay League Gabilan opener.

“I told them, ‘four is not enough against Salinas,’” Keathley said. “It’s just not. Against anybody it’s not enough.”

The Mustangs (2-2, 0-1) opened up hot, as everyone in the lineup saw the plate in the bottom of the first.

Salinas (3-3, 1-0) held a 1-0 lead after their first ups, but an error by their catcher allowed the tying run to come home.

Aaron Whitehouse’s RBI single gave them the 2-1 advantage and Patrick Muller brought in Whitehouse and Brian Morioka to go up by three runs.

Salinas finally got out of the inning by swapping pitchers, but the momentum was solely with the Mustangs.
