Boy's Lacrosse: Talented Mariners look to keep their league crown

Posted: Friday, Mar 7th, 2014

Aptos Mariners senior Nick Wameling will try to help the Aptos Mariners to their fifth straight Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championship. Tony Nunez/Register-Pajaronian

APTOS The last four seasons have been good to Aptos High boys lacrosse Head Coach Paul Murtha and with a roster full of all but one returning starter from the previous year, all signs point yes.

To a fifth straight Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title, that is.

It says the program is up and coming still, Murtha said. We have 65 kids come out for our two teams. Its a huge thing here at Aptos like I think it is in other places.

The Mariners have produced four lacrosse SCCAL titles since 2010 with the most recent appearance coming last year when they beat Soquel High 9-7 in the championship game. They also went a perfect 8-0 in league play.

Aptos is well equipped with key returning starting seniors such as Michael Meidl, Vince Porporato and co-captain Blake Kennerson who was one of four players to contribute 14 or more goals last season.

The other Mariner with stripes on his jersey is senior Nick Wameling who recorded 35 goals and 17 assists, which was good for first-team All-League honors in 2013.

I expect our team to be good, Wameling about the 2014 season. We continually put out a good program. I practiced all year and I did a lot of traveling around playing on a team up in Monterey.
