Local Round Up: Cabrillo’s basketball season ends in Sweet 16

The Cabrillo College Seahawks season came to an end in the Sweet 16 of the California Community College Athletic Association NorCal playoffs against Chabot College 76-73 Wednesday night in Hayward.

Warren Jackson led the Hawks with 24 points, 20 of them coming in the second half, and Allen Wilcher added 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as a final-second heave from Latrell Wilson fell short of finding its mark and tying the game up.

Wilson finished the game with 13 points and the Seahawks finished the year at 20-9.



Aragon 94, Aptos 93 - The Aptos Mariners’ season came to an end as they fell 94-93 in triple overtime in the Central Coast Section Division-III semifinals to the Aragon Dons Wednesday in Los Altos.

The Mariners finish their season at 22-6 overall.

Priory 55, St. Francis 53 - The Priory Panthers got the better of the St. Francis Central Coast Catholic Sharks in overtime, 55-53, to knock them out of the CCS D-V playoffs Wednesday at Alma Heights Christian.

The Sharks end their season at 14-13.



Watsonville 4, Aptos 1 - The Watsonville Wildcatz sunk the Aptos Mariners 4-1 thanks to a solid outing from junior pitcher Chris Rivera.

Rivera went seven innings scattering four hits and giving up a walk, while striking out 12 Mariners.

Ryan Munoz found some success in a pitcher’s dual for the Wildcatz (2-0) by finishing 2-of-3 with a run scored. Oscar Gonzalez recorded one RBI.

Watsonville played St. Francis Central Coast Catholic Friday and will play Alisal Wednesday at 4 p.m. in their first Monterey Bay League Pacific contest.

Aptos (0-2-1) host Carmel at 4 p.m. Monday.



Christopher 6, Aptos 5 - The Aptos Mariners gave up three runs in the final inning and lost 6-5 to the Christopher Cougars Wednesday in Gilroy.

Michelle Firebaugh took the loss. The senior pitcher went the distance striking out six Cougars.

She also hit a homer in the second inning to get the Mariners on the board.

They took the lead in their next ups, but were unable to hold to it for the win.

Casey Messersmith was 3-of-4 with four RBIs and Nicole Getzschmann finished 2-of-4 with two runs scored.

Aptos (0-2) played Carmel Friday at 4 p.m. and travels to Saratoga Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The outcome of the Carmel game was not known before print.

Watsonville 10, Anzar 0 - Desiree Gomez was 2-of-2 with three RBIs leading Watsonville to a 10-0, mercy-rule shortened win against Anzar Thursday in Watsonville.

Kristina Mio was the winning pitcher going five innings, and giving up two hits. She finished with eight strikeouts.

Lexie Gonzalez was 2-of-3 with two RBIs and one run. Myranda Valdez went 2-of-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs.

Samantha Sakai and Mio both scored twice.

Watsonville travels to Carmel Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.



Cabrillo 7, Gavilan 6 - The Cabrillo College Seahawks went eight innings to get a 7-6 win against Gavilan Thursday in a Coast Conference South play.

Taylor Tessier pitched eight innings giving up 11 hits, six runs and two walks, but got the win for the Seahawks (13-6, 3-2). She recorded 10 strikeouts in the win.

Taylor Batey was 3-of-4 with two RBIs and one run. Mikal Cuellar finished 3-of-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Cabrillo hosts Napa Valley College today in a double-header with the first game starting at noon.
