Girl's Softball: Catz showcase strong lineup, solid pitching in 2014

Posted: Thursday, Mar 6th, 2014

Tony Nunez/Register-Pajaronian Watsonville High sophomore pitcher Samantha Sakai will try to lead the Wildcatz to a league title in her second year on varsity.

WATSONVILLE — Last season, Samantha Sakai took her lumps. This season, she could lead Watsonville to a league title.

Behind a solid sophomore pitcher and a lineup full of scrappy hitters, the Watsonville Wildcatz will look to compete for a Monterey Bay League Pacific title.

“We’re going to be very competitive,” said Watsonville head coach Pete Legorreta. “There are some good teams out there, but I think we’re good enough to play with them.”

Watsonville got off on the wrong foot last season, but fired off six wins to finish the year.

A big reason for the wins was Sakai. After dominating the junior varsity level for the first half of the season, Legorreta made the decision to move the then freshman pitcher to the varsity ranks.

According to Legorreta, she did an admirable job.

“I think that it was a wonderful experience for her to come up last season,” Legorreta said, “because she came up here and she got her eyes opened. She realized that she had to work and improve. She’s still doing that.”
