SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz County Consumer Affairs Office is warning county residents to be wary of a phone scam by people purporting to be debt collectors.
According to Consumer Affairs coordinator Robin Gysin, Santa Cruz and Watsonville residents said they have received calls from people telling them that they owe a debt.
In some cases the callers threaten arrest or jail time if the amount is not paid immediately with a debit card or a wire transfer of funds.
According to Gysin, people with debts cannot be arrested for outstanding debts on consumer purchases or loans.
