WATSONVILLE — The 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head by suspected gang members Friday night was in stable condition Monday, according to Watsonville Police Sgt. Saul Gonzalez.

Doctors removed the boy’s left eye Sunday after the bullet shattered into pieces, and he will get a prosthetic eye. Because removing the bullet pieces is so risky, surgeons elected to leave them where they are, Gonzalez said.

“The doctors thought it would cause more damage to remove all the fragments,” he said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting just before 8 p.m. Friday to the 0-to-100 block of Loughead Avenue, and found the boy lying on the ground in front of a residence.

A witness who asked not to be named said the boy was talking as he lay on the sidewalk, saying, “they shot me, I’m dying.”
