WATSONVILLE — A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the head Friday night.
According to Watsonville Police, around 7:54 p.m., officers were dispatched to the initial block of Loughead Street for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 13-year-old male juvenile lying on the ground in front of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was only able to provide limited information due to his injuries, police said.
Emergency Medical Services responded and provided treatment to the victim.
During the investigation, officers learned that the victim was in the area of the shooting when he was approached by an unknown number of males believed to be members of a criminal street gang.
Without any provocation, one of the suspects displayed a firearm and fired at the victim, striking him in his head, according to police.
An extensive search of the surrounding area was conducted for the suspects without success.
Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, he was transported to a Bay Area trauma center for further treatment. As of Saturday afternoon, the victim remains in critical condition and his injuries are considered life-threatening.
Although police do not believe the victim is a member or associate of any criminal street gang, the case is being investigated as gang motivated due to the suspect's actions.
