SANTA CRUZ — More than five years after her arrest, an Aptos woman will likely face trial this month for the death of her young daughter.

Veva Virgil, 42, is due in court Feb. 6 to confirm a trial date for this month, which prosecutor Ross Taylor expects to proceed. Virgil is charged with murder for the death of Isabella Grace Martinez, her 3 ½-year-old daughter.

Jury selection is likely to start next week, Taylor said.

According to prosecutors, Virgil checked into the Motel 6 on Silverleaf Drive in Watsonville on Nov. 15, 2008 and smothered her child. Hotel staff found the girl’s body the next afternoon and Virgil was arrested that night in San Jose at Good Samaritan Hospital, where she’d been placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold.
