Capitola bookstore to close its doors

CAPITOLA — The Capitola Book Café is closing its doors at the end of this month, putting a final period in a story that began more than three decades ago.

“We're sorry beyond words that we couldn’t keep Capitola Book Café open for generations to come,” co-owner Wendy Mayer-Lochtefeld stated in an open letter to her customers. “We gave it our all, and then some.”

The announcement came Tuesday, but owners Mayer-Lochtefeld, Melinda Powers, Janet Leimeister, and Richard Lange have been fighting to keep the place open for years as Internet sales and a moribund economy slowed sales.
