A vision for the future

WATSONVILLE — Nearly five decades ago, South Korea native Dong Kim started as a silent partner in a new Santa Cruz eyeglass lens company. He took over the failing enterprise two years later in 1967.

At first running his business as a self-described one-man show, Kim built his initial customer base by driving throughout California in a VW Beetle with a $13 daily budget and a sample case with seven frame styles. He jokes that the first customers bought his products out of pity.

The business, Continental Sales Company, now generates annual revenue of close to $36.8 million. It is a powerhouse in the international lens industry, processing more than 3,000 orders for prescription glasses every day from a stock of 7,400 different lens types.
