Connecting teachers, students with agriculture

WATSONVILLE — Agriculture is an enormous industry in Santa Cruz County, with a total gross production of more than $566 million in 2012.

While the lion’s share of the berries, lettuce and other produce comes from the Pajaro Valley, many young people who live here see no future in staying, said Watsonville High School principal Elaine Legorreta.

“I hear it all the time,” she said. “They say, ‘I want to get a good job and go away.’”
