In response to the dry conditions that have plagued California this winter, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday officially declared a state of drought in the county, and asked residents to reduce their water use by 20 percent.

The announcement came at a press conference at the County Building, 11 days after Gov. Jerry Brown made the same declaration statewide.

Tuesday night, the Watsonville City Council asked residents for a voluntary 20 percent reduction, making the city one of many throughout the county and the state trying to deal with the drought by asking for similar voluntary reductions.
