SANTA CRUZ — Opening arguments were presented Tuesday in the retrial of Angel Torres, a Watsonville man on trial for the gang related murder of Richard Campos in 2009.
In the courtroom of Judge Paul Burdick prosecutor Johanna Schonfield spelled out a step-by-step account of how she believes Torres and accomplices, Joel Sanchez, Luis Meza and Jose Gonzalez of the Sureño street gang narrowed their search for an enemy gang (Norteño) member to gun down, known as a jale, a mission to show allegiance to the Sureños.
