Public safety tax measure proposal moves forward

Posted: Friday, Jan 24th, 2014

WATSONVILLE The Watsonville City Council will consider entering into an agreement with a consulting firm Tuesday who would draft a tax measure to fund public safety.

If the contract is approved, the tax measure would be brought to the City Council on Feb. 25 to decide if it should be placed on the June ballot, according to a report by Administrative Services Director Ezequiel Vega, Fire Chief Mark Bisbee and Police Chief Manny Solano.

The Revenue Measure Oversight Committee, which met on Wednesday, unanimously recommended that a one-half cent sales tax measure be placed on the June 3 ballot, the report stated. The committee also recommended that 60 percent of the revenue proceeds from the new tax be dedicated to police services, while 40 percent go toward fire services.
