APTOS — Citizens of the United States are often told to “vote with your dollars.”

In 2013, the Aptos community voted with their shopping dollars and the results were $200,000 raised to support local children with special needs.

Caroline’s Nonprofit Thrift Shop at 402/408 Trout Gulch Road in Aptos distributed the large sum in various increments to 17 local nonprofit organizations that serve children with special medical, developmental or psychological needs at their annual gifting ceremony at the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County on Sunday.

The amount is $80,000 more than was distributed last year and brings the total donated to area nonprofits at $360,000 since the shop opened in 2011.
