WATSONVILLE A grass fire that broke out on Sakata Lane Thursday caught the roof of a neighboring structure on fire.

According to Watsonville Fire Capt. Kirt Vojvoda, the 2 p.m. blaze, which burned two acres, threatened the Berry Chill cooler on 80 Sakata Lane. The business was closed that day, and firefighters had to force entry through a locked gate, he said.

As crews were battling the flames on Sakata Lane, which extended into some nearby trees, firefighters received a call at 2:30 p.m. that the roof of a structure on Walker Street had caught fire.

That incident was a result of sparks from Sakata Lane, Vojvoda said. The roof was quickly extinguished.

Vojvoda said firefighters were able to stop the head of the fire from reaching a Pacific Gas & Electric substation.

The two-acre grass fire was contained within 45 minutes. Smoke from the fire could be seen from across the city.

Crews from Watsonville Fire, Cal Fire and North Monterey County Fire Protection District responded to the incident.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no injuries were reported, Vojvoda said.
