WATSONVILLE — After lying dormant since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, and after a four-year planning process, the small dirt lot at Second and Main streets is seeing some action.

Workers broke ground at the site Wednesday in preparation for a two-story building that will eventually hold Fatima’s Fine Jewelry and the business’ offices, said Franco Vaca, who owns the business with his wife Fatima Carlos-Vaca.

Vaca said he hopes to open the doors by Sept. 15, which is Mexican Independence Day, or in October for the business’ anniversary.

The couple, which also owns El Pollero restaurant at Main Street and Riverside Drive, has been running their jewelry store out of the Discount Mall for nearly two decades.

Hoping to catch a larger customer base, however, they chose the more visible location. Vaca also said he hopes to keep potential customers from leaving Watsonville to go shopping.

“There are a lot of people to serve and there is a lot of economic power here,” he said.

In addition to jewelry, the new store will offer clothing, cosmetics, perfume and handbags, in addition to pawn and lending services.
